Love + Work
I’ve been working in the Career Coaching business a long time now and I have come to the conclusion that there’s no such thing as a perfect job, there’s no such thing as perfect in general. In fact we try to avoid the ‘P’ word in my house.
Your dream job is not out there waiting for you. There’s a common misconception that it is…..
But you really can design your dream job. There is no one dream job that is the ideal fit for you.
But you can make lots of jobs ideal enough.
There are good jobs in good places with good co-workers, and there are at least a couple of those jobs… good jobs that you can make close enough to an ideal fit for you so you can really love them, or part of them at least. A job/a career where you will flourish and feel fulfilled.
The secret is to be curious…..get to know yourself at a deeper level and develop self-awareness.
Knowing yourself helps you to live in alignment with your who, why and what. Knowing yourself and discovering what makes you tick is the first step to designing your dream job. Then it’s time to take action, and co-create!
“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.”
Lao Tzu
If you no longer feel fulfilled, excited or motivated about your work, it could be a sign that it’s time for a job change.
Marcus Buckingham talk’s about Love+Work in his book by that very name. Marcus is a global researcher and New York Times bestselling author focused on unlocking people’s strengths, increasing their performance, and defining a better future for how people work. He has cocreated leading strength’s assessments. Marcus Buckingham’s research shows that there needs to be some elements of love in your work, you don’t need to love 100% of your job, or love your work all the time, but it’s important to love some of your job. So how much love does there need to be?
Marcus’s research has found that to be fully engaged and committed to your job, you don’t need to love every minute of it. The magic number is 20%. If you’re doing something you love at least 20% of the time, you’ll like your job and want to stay in it. That number might surprise you — it might seem low. But the good news is, it’s doable. Start with 20%. If you find that there is 0% love or less that 20% love left it might be time to start looking further a field.
